ALthough it can be mistaken for it because it's black and white, this one is actually smaller and is a different species. I no longer have an Australian birds field guide with me, so I'm sorry I cannot give its right name, but I'm sure it's not a magpie.
I tried to look it up on the internet, it may be a male murray-magpie or mudlark, so indeed while it's not the kind of magpie I was used to seeing in Sydney it may be a magpie anyway.
