Etihad Stadium on a windy day

Etihad Stadium, formerly Colonial Stadium and Telstra Dome, is set in the redeveloped Docklands precinct immediately adjacent to Melbourne's CBD. The integrated urban stadium development has been designed with event flexibility as a key component. One of the main design features is the translucent saddle-shaped stadium roof which is supported by the seating structure and two 295m long trusses, enhancing the intense atmosphere, optimising stadium acoustics.

Etihad Stadium is a multipurpose venue which hosts as many as 85 sports and entertainment events per year. Our major hirer is the AFL which on average schedules 50-55 matches per year including NAB Cup pre-season games and the occasional final.

Furthermore, the stadium hosts domestic and international soccer events, rugby matches (Union and League) as well as concerts and entertainment events with the ability to have 60,000 plus patrons.

Etihad Stadium was designed by a Populous joint venture, Bligh Lobb Sports Architecture and Daryl Jackson Pty Ltd.

Aurora

Aurora named after the Roman goddess of the dawn, Aurora's inverted cargo net makes a symbolic connection to Docklands' history as Victoria's most important port. 

Aurora' is a 14 metre high stainless steel piece commissioned by the State Government. A crucial element in Geoff Bartlett's design was that 'Aurora' should present strikingly different characters by day and by night, is lit from within to create a glowing orb floating above the street. The piece encourages pedestrians to walk through it's legs and look upwards, to " focus their attention away from the everyday and to reflect upon the work and the sky beyond "

Bolte Bridge

The Bolte Bridge is a large twin Cantilever bridge in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It spans the Yarra Riverand Victoria Harbour in the Docklands precinct to the west of the Melbourne CBD. It forms part of the CityLinksystem of toll roads that connects the Tullamarine Freeway from the northern suburbs with the West Gate Freeway and the Domain and Burnley tunnels to the Monash Freeway and the south eastern suburbs.

Melbourne artist Emily Floyd’s Signature Work is a playful addition to the public art collection at Docklands. Resembling an abstracted toy rabbit, it is intended to amuse and confound passers-by. Standing nearly four metres high and coated in black Polyurethane paint, the aluminium-plate sculpture is also reminiscent of futuristic creations such as Darth Vader, or the menacing rabbit figure in the film Donny Darko. Planted in the urban landscape of Docklands, the presence of this giant rabbit is both cute and unsettling as it looms over the viewer.

Blowhole

More public sculptures at Docklands Park. This one called " Blowhole " Just the wind can blow this hole because it is 15 m. high wind powered. Sculptured by Sydney-based artist, Duncan Stemler, creating a spectacular animated beacon within Docklands' playground and park. The piece heralds the area's maritime history and it's renaissance as a vibrant urban destination. When the wind is strong enough ( today ), the armature and cups form a complex galaxy of orbiting balls, mimicking the anemometer on top of a yacht's mast.

Reed Vessel

In the rain again ! you can see the drop of the rain in my photo. And this is one of 29 public sculptures in Dockland called " Reed Vessel " by New Zealand artist, Virginia King is a woven and elevated vessel form supported on a cradle 4.5 metres above a pool of water integrated with the wetlands of the 3-hectare Docklands Park, and embracing the themes of migration, survival and the sea. The cradle is sandblasted with poets and writers and also reference marine archeology and once abundant foods that aboriginal people harvested from this tidal wetland.

The sculpture is fabricated from stainless steel work and appears to emerge from the water, a symbol of the rekindled spirit at the docks.

A dull day on Webb Bridge

This Webb bridge look really great at night time, and look really good at the bright sunny day. And it has so many good photos of this bridge from internet. So I chose the dull rainy day for my shot. Something different for you !!!

Webb Bridge or Web Bridge? You'll find both names applied to the walkway/cycleway across the Yarra River from the southside housing developments to the northside entertainment, shopping and dining venues at the Melbourne Docklands.

It's an interesting, unique-looking bridge which is part of a Melbourne public art project. Webb Bridge (or Web Bridge) was actually designed to represent a Koori eel trap. The bridge reuses the remaining sections of the disused Webb Rail Bridge.

The design received first prize in a limited design competition. The brief called for the re-use of the remaining sections of the Webb Dock Rail Bridge, in order to link the Docklands on the north side to the new residential developments on the south side.

But because the framework of the bridge does look like a mesh or web, the name Web Bridge may become the more common appellation.

The bridge comprises two distinct sections: the 145m long existing structure and a new curved 80m long ramped link.

Crossing Webb Bridge from the Yarra River southside area known as Yarra's Edge brings you to Docklands Park on the north side and thence to Victoria Harbour Promenade, Harbour Esplanade with Etihad Stadium on the right, and on to NewQuay and Waterfront City on the north side of Victoria Harbour.

As an object, it appears as a delineated structure, a sensuous volume, light and linear. Space is seen as atmospheric, dynamic and transitional.’
